Wood moisture content is one of the most important parameters in timber construction, forestry, and furniture manufacturing. Freshly felled wood can have moisture contents exceeding 100%. For further processing, wood must be dried to a use-appropriate equilibrium moisture – typically 8–12% for interior work, 15–18% for exterior applications. Excessive moisture promotes fungal attack and deformation; overly dry wood may crack. Measurement is carried out by the oven-dry method (gravimetric) or using electrical resistance meters. Shrinkage and swelling are direct consequences of moisture changes. Kiln drying or air drying significantly affects quality and workability.
