The mortise and tenon joint is one of the oldest and most proven connections in carpentry and furniture making. The tenon is cut at the end of one member and fits into the precisely made mortise of the counterpart. Pegged or glued, it creates a form-fit and force-fit connection. Variants include through tenons, blind tenons, and dovetail tenons. In traditional timber framing, entire roof structures and half-timbered buildings are assembled using this joint. In modern CNC production, mortise and tenon joints are manufactured with high precision. The joint reliably transfers compressive, tensile, and bending forces and is long-lasting when properly executed.
