Pfleiderer is one of the established European manufacturers of coated wood-based materials with a focus on particleboards and MDF for furniture manufacturing and interior fitting-out. The company with production facilities in Germany, Poland and Russia primarily supplies industrial customers – kitchen manufacturers such as Nobilia, furniture producers and carpentry businesses. Unlike pure raw board suppliers such as Kronospan, Pfleiderer focuses on pre-decorated substrate boards with integrated surface technology.

Duropal: Laminated boards for wet rooms and kitchen worktops

The Duropal product line includes high-pressure laminate boards (HPL) on particleboard substrate, optimized for mechanically and thermally stressed applications. Typical specifications: substrate board E1/P2 to EN 312, HPL layer 0.8–1.2 mm to EN 438, edge protection via ABS or decorative edge banding. Applications: kitchen worktops with thicknesses of 38–40 mm, washbasin tops, laboratory furniture and shop fittings. The laminated surface achieves abrasion class AC4–AC5 and tolerates surface temperatures up to 180 °C for short periods.

Duropal boards are standard delivered in formats 4,100 × 600–1,300 mm, pre-cut at the factory or as continuous material for inline systems. The U-shaped edge protection (postforming) is via heated radii; alternative adhesive techniques such as PUR hot melt allow seamless transitions. For carpentry businesses with CNC equipment, Pfleiderer also offers board formats 2,800 × 2,070 mm to minimize waste in island solutions.

Thermopal: Melamine-coated particleboards for series furniture

Thermopal refers to Pfleiderer's portfolio of melamine resin-coated particleboards (CPL – Continuous Pressure Laminate). Substrate board: particleboard E05/P2 to EN 312, coated on both sides with decorative paper and melamine overlay, total thickness 8–38 mm, bulk density 650–680 kg/m³. Compared to HPL, the melamine layer is thinner (0.15–0.2 mm), more cost-effective and suitable for carcass and front applications in series kitchens, office furniture and fitted wardrobes. Abrasion class: AC3 to EN 438-2, light fastness at least level 5 (grey scale) to ISO 105-B02.

The Thermopal range includes over 200 decorations – from wood reproductions (oak, walnut, spruce) to solid colors and textured surfaces. Soft-touch variants with matte feel and anti-fingerprint coating target high-end kitchen fronts. Formatting: raw boards 2,800 × 2,070 mm or 5,680 × 2,070 mm for inline systems with industrial customers. The board edges require factory-side or subsequent edge banding, typically with 0.4–2 mm ABS or PVC edges via hot-melt or laser edge banding technology.

DecoBoard: MDF substrate for painting and veneering

DecoBoard boards are based on medium-density fiberboards (MDF) to EN 622-5, untreated or primed. Bulk density 720–780 kg/m³, thicknesses 6–40 mm, E1 emissions. Target group: businesses with their own paint line or veneer press who apply custom surfaces. The homogeneous fiber structure enables precise routing for panel-frame fronts, trim strips and profiled furniture parts without splintering at the cutting edge.

Pfleiderer supplies DecoBoard optionally raw, white-primed (1–2 coats of primer, layer thickness ~60–80 µm) or with factory painting in RAL colors. For high-gloss painting, the primed variant is recommended to minimize pore filling and sanding passes. Paint shops frequently use UV-curing acrylic systems that are clocked in inline systems at 10–15 m/min. The alternative: solid wood veneer (0.6–1.2 mm) is applied via vacuum press or hot press, then sanded and sealed.

Market position and competition in the board market

Pfleiderer competes in Europe with Kronospan, Egger and Fantoni. While Kronospan primarily focuses on volume and raw board business, Pfleiderer differentiates itself through decoration variety and integrated coating lines. Egger serves a similar segment but has broader vertical integration (own particleboard production, edge-banding mill, logistics centers). Fantoni positions itself more strongly in the high-end furniture sector with premium HPL surfaces.

Current developments: In 2023, Pfleiderer expanded its decoration collection by 40 new designs, including matte surfaces with tactile wood texture and recycled designs from post-consumer material. Production capacity was increased by 12% through modernization of the coating lines in Neumarkt (Germany). For major customers, Pfleiderer offers just-in-time delivery with factory-side cutting services – relevant for series manufacturers who want to minimize storage costs and source directly formatted carcass parts.

Processing tips for carpentry businesses

Coated particleboards and MDF require adapted tool configurations: carbide-tipped circular saw blades with 48–72 teeth for clean cutting edges, scoring saw for double-sided coating, feed rate 8–12 m/min. Milling tools with diamond or PKD cutting edges extend tool life with abrasive melamine surfaces. Drilling should be done with countersinks to prevent edge breakout. For integration into CNC centers, manufacturers such as Homag and IMA Schelling offer specialized panel saws and edge-banding machines.

Edge coating is done with thermoplastic edges (ABS, PP) or hot-melt adhesives based on EVA or PUR. Laser edge-banding enables seamless joints without visible glue line – the prerequisite is an exact board edge and calibrated pressure. Pfleiderer recommends for Thermopal boards a room temperature of 18–22 °C at 45–65% relative humidity to prevent warping from moisture absorption.
